About Department:

The Department of English of Sree Siddaganga College of Arts, Science and Commerce was  established in the year 1966. English language was compulsory for all the streams and combinations till the induction of NEP. Now under NEP students can learn any two languages.  In addition to English language, we offer courses with Optional English as a core subject. From 2018-2019  to 2022-23, the department is engaged in various pro-academic activities with considerable out come.  The following teachers have rendered their services for the all round development of the department and college during the last five years.

Course Outcomes [CO's]

CO1. Comment on the significance of human values with reference to the stories and the novels prescribed.

CO2. Critically examine the way how human beings are tested in the course of life.

CO3. Bring out the importance of good communication skills in social life.

CO4. Examine how lack of understanding leads to a drift in human relationships.

CO5. Comment on the relationship between citizens and the nation with reference to ‘Animal form’.

CO6. Analyse the poems in terms of their concern regarding the environment issues.

CO7. How do the stories and novels prescribed focus on self- realization, self-understanding and self-motivation of an individual.

CO8. Comment on the evil practice of untouchability with reference to ‘Untouchable’, a novel by Mulk Raj Anand.

Programme Outcomes [PO's]

PO1. INCULCATING MORAL VALUES: Students are enlightened about life and the values that are essential to constitute a sound society. They are made aware of the importance of man’s relationship to other human beings, the creatures of nature, nature and the universe through short stories. Essays and poems that they can enjoy.

PO2. CRITICAL THINKING:  A critical insight is developed among students as to analyse the problems, the complex situations and social issues.

PO3. EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: Students are taught about the basics of grammar and composition to enable them to use language effectively. They are also taught about basic and advanced skills of communication. They are made to improve their vocabulary by reading stories, essays and poems.

PO4. SOCIAL INTERACTION: The students are made aware of the importance of social interaction which helps them to lead a better life through examples shared by the learned writers, philosophers and social thinkers.

PO5. EFFECTIVE CITIZENSHIP: The literary pieces chosen for the respective programme lay emphasis on the role of man in society, in domestic circles and in building the nation. The short stories, essays and poems make the students realize their responsibilities as the nation builders.

PO6. ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY : Literature deals with all that concerns life. The texts chosen focus on educating the younger generation on the environmental issues, natural resources and their sustainability and protecting the mother earth.

PO7 : SELF-EDUCATION, SELF-HELP, SELF-RESPECT: Ambedkar always spoke on the importance of these three in everybody’s life. The students are encouraged to realize their potential and choose the right path by adopting these three concepts in life.
