About Department:

The Department of Chemistry  of Sree Siddaganga College of Arts, Science and Commerce was  established in the year 1966. Chemistry was an important Subject for both PCM and CBZ and also in NEP. Now under NEP students can learn Chemistry in addition to Physics,Mathematics,Botany and Zoology etc. Since from 1966 to til date , the Department is engaged in various pro-academic activities with considerable out come.  The following teachers have rendered their services for the overall- development of the department and college during the last five years.

Course Outcomes [CO's]

     CHEMISTRY PAPER-I

To develop interest among students in various branches of inorganic chemistry.

To impart essential theoretical knowledge on atomic structure, periodic properties,

chemical bonding, and nuclear chemistry.

 CHEMISTRY PAPER-II

To impart the students a thorough knowledge about the organic chemistry and physical chemistry. in organic chemistry some selected functional groups with a view to develop proper aptitude towards the study of organic compounds and their reactions. To enable the students to understand and study Organic reaction mechanisms, basic concepts of thermodynamics, surface chemistry and electro chemistry

 CHEMISTRY PAPER-III

To provide an insight into the characteristics of different types of solutions and provide an insight into the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of chemical reactions and phase equilibrium .in organic students will learn about nomenclature and reaction of some important functional groups in organic compounds

  CHEMISTRY PAPER-IV

To understand the general characteristics of the d and f block elements To give the students a thorough knowledge of the different theories to explain the bonding in coordination compounds. To understand the general characteristics of different states of matter. To impart knowledge to the students about the intermolecular forces in gases and liquids, the structure of solids, Defects in solids .give some knowledge about kinetics of the reaction

 CHEMISTRY PAPER-V

To impart the students a thorough knowledge in geometric and optical isomerism. To study the fundamentals of terpenoids, alkaloids, vitamins, lipids ,and steroids .improving  knowledge about industrial importance of some organic compounds. To impart a thorough knowledge on the fundamentals of microwave, infra red, and NMR spectroscopy

CHEMISTRY PAPER-VI

To enable the students to solve the simple quantum mechanical models such as simple harmonic oscillator, particle in a 1D- box, rigid rotor, H atom etc. To impart a thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of microwave, infra red, Raman, electronic and magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and photochemistry.

 CHEMISTRY PAPER-VII

Impart knowledge about inorganic polymers .definition, classification with appropriate examples based on nature of metal-carbon bond of organometallic compounds .some knowledge about silicates fertilizers and surface coating. To acquire the skill to analyze some common alloys and ores.

  CHEMISTRY PAPER-VIII

Imparting knowledge on lipids, amino acids, peptides, proteins, nucleic acids, enzymes , hormones and vitamins and their role in biological system.

Programme Outcomes [PO's]

Program Objectives:

  • To give conceptual knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of sciences.
  • To prepare students to go for higher education and research as a career.
  • To develop employability skills and entrepreneurship.

Program Outcomes: After completion of the programme, the student is able to do

  • Analysis, investigation and synthesis of organic and inorganic compounds.
  • Handling of instruments like spectrophotometer, CRO etc.
  • Develop logical and analytical thinking, problem solving skill.

Programme Specific Outcomes [PSO's]

PSO1: This paper presents the basic principles of chemistry that is periodic properties of s and p block elements, atomic structure, chemical bonding, molecular structure, basic principles of organic chemistry, stereochemistry, principles of green chemistry and Chromatographic techniques.

PSO2: Students should have a working knowledge of the main area of chemistry organic, inorganic and physical.

PSO3: To understand the important concepts of physical chemistry and functional properties of carbonyl compounds, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, Compounds containing nitrogen and Heterocyclic.

PSO4: Students should be able to understand properties of d-block elements, chemistry of coordination compounds, Chemistry of gases, liquids and solids and kinetic studies.

PSO5: To have an understanding of the Stereochemistry of organic compounds, properties and uses of natural products, synthetic organic chemistry and molecular spectroscopy.

PSO6: To understand quantum chemistry, molecular spectroscopy and photochemistry.

PSO7:Study of organomettalic compounds, inorganic polymers, industrial inorganic chemistry and metallurgy.

PSO8: To understand Chemistry of biomolecules, bio-inorganic chemistry and concepts of energy in biosystem.

PSO9: In practical classes students are trained to do the quantitative analysis by volumetry, electro analystical techniques and qualitative analysis of both organic and inorganic compounds.
