Department of Zoology

About Department:

The Department of Zoology took its shape, during the year 1972-73.Prof Nagendran was in charge of the department followed by Dr.H.S.Niranjan Aradhya , he  assumed the charge of the head of the department from 5th September 1986. Dr. Aradhya along with Dr. Nagabushan has introduced certain innovations in the department like the development of practical manuals, Seminars, Study Tour for degree students. The college was bifurcated into Pre-University and degree colleges in the year 2001. As a result of bifurcation Prof. Nagabushana was transferred to Girls college and M.Anilkumar, N.Sateeshwaradev, C.S.Shivakumar was transferred to Sree siddaganga PU college for women and boys respectively in the year 2003.The specimens, slides and equipments needed for degree classes were acquired by getting funds from the management and UGC. Smt.Hemavathi, Gangana, H. Gangaiah ,Sankarappa, Bhogananda Murthy and Prasanna were the supporting staff from time to time also helped maintaining cleanliness in the department. The department acquired bio visual charts, refrigerator, OHP, Microscopes, and hand lenses from UGC and state funds. The ‘Forum of life sciences’ was established under the leadership of HOD. A computer was acquired by the department and was being used to teach students. Several compact discs and copies were available in the department for the use of students and staff.

Associate Professor M.Anilkumar was transferred to Degree college in the year 2013. He assumed the charge of HOD of Zoology. In 2018 the college underwent NAAC process and college was accredited with B++ grade. During this period there was lot of improvement in the department. In the year 2013, department acquired another computer, a lap top and internet facility. Lab -2 is provided with “SMART BOARD” Since then ICT is being extensively made use for teaching and for student seminars. The Department was renovated by Vitrified tiles and false roofing in the year 2017. Innovative teaching, Study Trips and Other ICT enabled TLE have attracted students to Zoology subject.

Department of Zoology implemented National Education Policy (NEP 2020) from the academic year 2021-22 as per the directions of Tumkur University. It is an opportunity for Student-Centric Higher Education. The Zoology Department provided Core Courses, Open Elective Course-Economic Zoology and Skill Enhancement Course- Vermiculture for the First Semester Students. During the present year (2023), the Department of Zoology is eagerly waiting for the Respected Peer Team for Assessment &Evaluation.

Course Outcomes [CO's]

Curriculum is important in an educational system. It is focused r to achieve the  objectives of each course of the programme and on the expected learning outcomes from each course

The objective based curriculum refers to the overall targets to be achieved through curriculum which may be long term or immediate.

Programme Outcomes [PO's]

  1. PO1 – Students gain knowledge and skill in the fundamentals of animal sciences, understands the complex interactions among various living organisms
  2. PO2 – Analyse complex interactions among the various animals of different phyla, their distribution and their relationship with the environment
  3. PO3 – Apply the knowledge of internal structure of cell, its functions in control of various metabolic functions of organisms.
  4. PO4 – Understands the complex evolutionary processes and behaviour of animals
  5. PO5 – Correlates the physiological processes of animals and relationship of organ systems
  6. PO6 – Understanding of environmental conservation processes and its importance, pollution control and biodiversity and protection of endangered species
  7. PO7 – Gain knowledge of Agro based Small Scale industries like sericulture, fish farming, butterfly farming and vermicompost preparation.
  8. PO8 – Understands about various concepts of genetics and its importance in human health
  9. PO9 – Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities in delivering his duties
  10. PO10 – Apply the knowledge and understanding of Zoology to one’s own life and work
  11. PO11 – Develops empathy and love towards the animals & Creatures.

Programme Specific Outcomes [PSO's]

  1. Understand the nature and basic concepts of cell biology, genetics, taxonomy, physiology, ecology and applied Zoology
  2. Analyse the relationships among animals, plants and microbes
  3. Perform procedures as per laboratory standards in the areas of Taxonomy, Physiology, Ecology, Cell biology, Genetics, Applied Zoology, Clinical science, tools and techniques of Zoology, Toxicology, Entomology,Nematology Sericulture, Biochemistry, Fish biology, Animal biotechnology, Immunology and research methodology
  4. Understand the applications of biological sciences in Apiculture, Aquaculture, Agriculture and Medicine
  5. Gains knowledge about research methodologies, effective communication and skills of problem solving methods
  6. Contributes the knowledge for others &Nation building.
